What have we done?

We are new-age parents. We scroll endlessly for parenting tips, to become the best parents we could. We try to keep our kids safe from the dangers of the world, teaching them all about good touch, bad touch, stranger danger, etc. We give them the most nutritious food. Blueberries, pistachios, figs, broccoli and what not occupy a space in our kitchen, while we were Parle-G and white bread consuming kids.

We try to enroll them in the best possible schools, slightly more expensive than what we can comfortably afford. We try to keep them away from screens. We enroll them in skill building classes.

We are reading more and more about mental and physical health because we want them to have a happier and healthier life.

We move to areas a little away from suburbs to give them fresh air, open spaces, and a cleaner and greener environment.

And then, we see trees being cut, hills being flattened and greenery disappearing to make way for mega malls and airports. We proudly say that we have moved to a better lifestyle sans traffic jams. We applaud and pride upon having an amazing new and advanced airport in our area.

Ah the delusion!

Somewhere, deep within our hearts, we know that it’s not going to remain the same once the ‘development’ projects increase by leaps and bounds. Slowly breathing problems soak in, fog becomes smog. Traffic will eventually increase once the airport is fully functional. We witness more people moving in masks 😷 (myself included) but we are too naive to accept the reality.

We will soon be stuck in jams. The fixed 12-min school bus ride will vary from 15-25 mins because of the increased traffic. Noise and air pollution is bound to increase. Let’s accept it, we can’t do anything about it now. Maybe we were living in the upside down when it all started, oblivious to the fact that the new airport means endless new construction and greenery’s destruction.

We have brought it upon ourselves, upon our kids.

30 years from now, our kids will opt to move to a cleaner and greener place. And then, another airport would be ‘needed’.

Am I right? What do we do? We want better infrastructure, but we need cleaner air.
