How to Build a Reading Habit in Kids (Ages 5–9)

Does your child avoid books but happily spends time on screens? You’re not alone. Many Indian parents struggle with building reading habits in kids—especially between ages 5–9.

The good news? Reading can become something your child looks forward to, not something they resist. While introducing books at a younger age helps, it is never too late. Start with colourful books with pictures and lesser text. Chapter books can be introduced once you see that your child starts reading and completing the books they pick. it also helps to introduce them to different genres, while starting with what they like first.

For example, if a kid likes superheroes, it helps to get a small book say of avengers or Hulk or Spiderman. If the child likes unicorns, you can choose from a hige range of storybooks with unicorns as the main character. Always check the age group of the recommended book, and start with eay ones.

Why Kids Don’t Like Reading?
Too much pressure from adults.
It feels like “study time”.
They think that books are too difficult or boring.

Simple Ways to Build a Reading Habit:
1. Start Small (10–15 Minutes Daily) – Consistency matters more than duration.
2. Create a Cozy Reading Space – A small corner with cushions and books can make a big difference.
3. Let Them Choose – Even comics or silly stories count!
4. Read Together – Children love connection more than content.
5. Don’t Correct Too Much – Focus on enjoyment, not perfection.

Also, it helps when they see their parents reading books. Try to avoid scrolling through social media on mobiles when around kids. Talk about some stories you loved as a child. Take them to a book store a couple of times in a week.

Reading is not just a skill—it’s an experience. When children feel curious about stories and and are in an environment that facilitates reading , they naturally move toward books.

If your child enjoys stories but struggles to sit and read, a guided, gentle space can help. That’s exactly what we do in our Cozy Book Nook sessions.
